Two Husbands'... Chapter 5 continued

Chapter 5 continued...

2 husbands at work

SMALLY
And them all together
jammed like turtles in a closet?
Oh, no, you haven’t said it all!
No. Let’s go back and back and back into time.
Who thought of numbers?
Egyptians? Cave-people?

Who measured them?
Who measured the planetary suffixes?

(Biggy doesn’t understand. Smally points into space)

People who are looking into the sky,
sure of time; and then, always measuring,
taking the exact length or distance;
and then, chopping increments
or dents into a log.

BIGGY
Or upon their enemies’ chins!

SMALLY
Using an abacus or a meridian,
comparing distances and just bringing down
all the numbers from the face of “up above” in the sky
(which is maybe sort of a “Lord”
who can unload down upon them
the serious sense of things - with numbers -
with numbers added up, subtracted, mixed and multiplied).

BIGGY
Like what we do with them.

SMALLY
Yes. And all the serious planar magic
is occurring to these ancient people
through a touch of that ‘Lord’, a God:
a very straight God, a straight ahead God
with sense on his mind - sense for them.

BIGGY
So, then they got it, piece by piece,
gradually over the years.

SMALLY
Yes, as certain things one after another,
or consecutively, or making no sense,
just popped into their minds.
Or, somehow, differently, things began to stick
and numbers were made into very many things
ruled over and expanded...

BIGGY
Just as we are doing to them.

SMALLY
Yet (sigh), we are losing control
and the numbers’ mini-powerful increments
are controlling us.
And we, often - as usual, almost - as men,
have hideous fear of failure!

BIGGY
Yet, we have failed.

SMALLY
We did fail - and miserably;
and became unattached to our hearts;
and forgot our original face of ‘up above’
who sailed all about from the beginning
‘amongst the sun and the moon’ free of the numbers.

BIGGY
Free of numbers - yet, always able
to be spitting them out,
down upon us!

SMALLY
Oh, how compacted we have become, Biggy!
slurping up all of the above God’s facts and figures;
preparing a just and hopeful formula for happiness
and success; and then letting others do it for us!
And these men are putting the numbers together
to an unalterable degree toward:
    toppling buildings
    bursting bombs,
    flying high speeds,
    developing gargantuan drugs;
    experimenting, operating  and assuming much more
about the whole expansive mess! while each moment
losing the initial, compassionate reference point
which is the understanding  of their own humble hearts -
with human humility, sacred or religious. I don’t know!
(He sighs)
Anyway, all numbers toward what?
How can we be handling them?

(Biggy is staring out of the window)

(End of Chapter 5, again)
