The Numbers Graph

Two Husbands look at the numbers graph put up...
ONLOOKER
They’re put up to it?
NARRATOR
Their calculations,
manipulations and counting substantial...
ONLOOKER
And, do they agree?
NARRATOR
Two husbands add up.
ONLOOKER
To something?
NARRATOR
The Two Husbands add up
but their wives are gone.
The two men are left alone at the business office
in the graph chart room.
What’s ever curvilinear in their minds
won’t leap onto the page;
won’t get onto this chart!
What’s ever leaping
and beating hard
won’t make it onto these charts.
It won’t make a big mess there
and interrupt the slow, gradual accumulations.
It won’t obscure the calculateable positions
adding up on the graph.

(The Two Husbands are called Biggy and Smally)
BIGGY
These numbers mean nothing
unless they’re mine!
I hear 17 but I can only write 1...
SMALLY
And therefore you don’t go nowhere!
BIGGY
Right, Smally!
If each one of them is separate in their box
where will it all go?
SMALLY
Back to the basement.
BIGGY
I say 3 won’t make sense.
SMALLY
You’re uselessly and senselessly afraid of zeros!
BIGGY
Yes, I am!
SMALLY
Fill them in!
Fill them in using fuller amounts;
bandier and broader, like the numbers
rolling along the bottom.
The numbers won’t freak you!
BIGGY
Oh, yes they can!
(Meanwhile, at this very moment in Mexico, the Two Escaped Wives are landing in their home-made rocket next to the Women's Club mountain. End of Chapter 1)
